saying good bye sucks - always - and having done it so many times and knowing that friends are friends regardless of how long you can't speak to them or see them it stil doesn't ever seem to get easier. at the same time it is a strange feeling to be very sad and extremely happy at the same time - very sad because I already miss my friends, will miss them even more once I have settled down a bit but extremely happy because this opportunity here in Rwanda is a dream come true and the longer I had to wait for departure-day the itchier my feet got, the more I just wanted the saying good-bye phase to be over, to be on that plane and to leave. It's like two currents pulling in opposite directions - I wanted to stay but I wanted to go.
well, it was hard and sad to go for that last lunch, last coffee, give one last kiss, one last hug, close the door one last time, walk down the hill one last time - then the bus didn't come for ages - and you stand there with your chatterbox friends, with whom there's always loads to discuss - and suddenly you're lost for words... that's when you know it's serious ;-))
And so many times in the last few weeks I thought to myself what a lucky person I am: I have the most amazing friends who even though they don't want me to leave share my excitement and happiness in this new adventure, encourage me to jump in head first, console me when I'm having a freak out and reassure me when I'm having doubts as to whether I can actually do the job I came here for (about which I still only know very little ;-)).
In a nutshell: friendships are better than normal ships! thank you to all my dear friends for all you have done for me in the last weeks and months - it makes a world of difference to have such people in my life.
